Re-racked from ex-bourbon into a 1st fill Palo Cortado hogshead, this cask moves from bright Speyside fruit into a more structured, nutty and complex sherry style.
Nose
Elegant and layered.
Fresh orchard fruits — green apple and pear — now sit alongside toasted almonds, orange peel and light walnut oil. Hints of caramelised sugar, dried apricot and subtle spice begin to emerge, with Palo Cortado’s hallmark dry nuttiness giving refinement rather than heavy sweetness.
Palate
Structured and developing depth.
The creamy vanilla and honey from the bourbon phase are now wrapped in hazelnut, light toffee, citrus marmalade and gentle dried fruits. Unlike PX, the influence is drier and more savoury — showing roasted nuts, polished oak and warming spice, while the Tamdhu spirit keeps it lifted and fruit-forward.
Finish
Medium to long, clean and sophisticated.
Lingering almond skin, orange zest, soft cinnamon and elegant oak dryness, with sweetness balanced by a refined, slightly saline edge.
Recognised Speyside name with strong blender heritage
Increasing single malt brand positioning under Ian Macleod
Known for quality cask policy
Growing independent bottler interest
For your April 2022 Palo Cortado Hogshead, this background supports a narrative of:
A quality Speyside distillery with strong maturation credentials and growing premium positioning — offering solid long-term maturation potential.
Founded in 1897, Tamdhu sits on the banks of the River Spey in the heart of Speyside. The distillery was originally established by a consortium of whisky blenders who wanted a reliable, high-quality malt for their blends — a testament to the spirit’s consistency and weight from the outset.
Today, Tamdhu is owned by Ian Macleod Distillers, who repositioned the brand as a premium single malt with a strong focus on maturation quality.
Water source: Tamdhu Spring (fed from underground springs near the River Spey)
Still shape: Tall copper stills contributing to a refined, lighter spirit
Capacity: Approx. 4 million litres annually
